Considering that my paid plugins are interfacing the system to moving targets (alarm system, security camera system, thermostats, a couple of lighting technologies) that are constantly having their own software updates, I'm happy to have paid a couple of bucks to have someone continue to support and update these plugins.(Update January 2021) We continued running Home Assistant and spend over $2k on smart devices (sensors are expensive, but still no regrets) ( see the full list). The plugin thing is what it is I've got 16 plugins on my system, half of them paid, half of them free.

I switched everything over to Homeseer on a PC that I could scale as I needed, and now have about 5x as many devices, etc. I did Vera for a few years, but about a year and half ago I reached the point where there were enough devices on the system that responsiveness fell to a crawl. On the other hand if you're the type to catch the bug and can see that it's possible that down the road you're going to have a bunch of stuff integrated into the system (lights, alarms, security cameras, etc.) then seriously consider Homeseer. How susceptible are you to jumping down rabbit holes? If you figure you're just going to control a handful of devices, then it probably doesn't make any difference.
